My Writing Process Blog Tour

Hello everyone! I am the next step in the multi-author Writing Process Blog Tour, thanks to Sarah Schmitt whose phenomenal “Writing Process” post you can view here. Sarah is my agency sibling (we’re both LRA authors) and is the fabulous author of the forthcoming IT’S A WONDERFUL DEATH from Strange Chemistry this fall. I am so excited for her!

Without further ado, here are my answers to My Writing Process!

1) What am I working on?

I am working on the sequel to The Fallen Prince (the sequel to The Almost Girl). I’m also outlining a couple new projects including a contemporary story as well as a companion novel to Alpha Goddess. I’m like Dory from Finding Nemo, but instead of swimming, my mantra is: “just keep writing, just keep writing, just keep writing, writing, writing …”

2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?

This is a tough question because there are so many amazing YA authors out there, but I would hope that my work would be different because of what I bring to the table. I grew up in Trinidad, an area of the world full of folklore and mysticism, and spent my entire childhood in multicultural, multi-religious, multilingual home. It’s given me a great foundation for experiencing different cultures and understanding the true meaning of diversity, which I think gives my writing a unique edge and voice.

3) Why do I write what I do?

I love writing YA. I love the intensity of teenage life—the discovery, the defiance, the self-confidence, the flaws of youth, the vibrancy of it, the all-or-nothing mentality—it makes the stakes so much higher and the scenarios far more compelling. On top of that, I always say that reading books saved me as a teenager from many things (including myself), and a part of me simply hopes to pay it forward.

4) How does my writing process work?

It depends. Sometimes, when I’m on a roll, I just go. I don’t stop, and my kids don’t get bathed or fed on time. Other times, I take frequent breaks. It just really depends on when those creative juices get going. I don’t have a set schedule, however, I do try to write daily. I also don’t tend to outline, so I guess that makes me a “pantser.”  If I’m on a plane or in transit somewhere and have an interesting idea, then I do flesh out a very simple outline with characters and basic plot. All the books I’ve written just started and kept going and going until they were done, sans outline. They continually evolved, like living things.

Thanks for reading, and be sure to check out the next three amazing authors (who are also my critique partners) coming up on March 24th and March 31st!

Page MorganPage Morgan is the author of the young adult Gothic thriller, THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED and its upcoming sequel, THE LOVELY AND THE LOST. She became intrigued by gargoyles when she came across an old, black-and-white photograph of a Notre Dame gargoyle keeping watch over the city of Paris. Right away, she knew she had to tell that gargoyle’s story. Page lives in New England with her husband and their three daughters, along with an English Pointer puppy, an arrogant cat, two surprisingly cuddly bearded dragons, and a brood of chickens.

Cindy ThomasCindy Thomas is the Marketing Coordinator and a senior publicist for Spencer Hill Press/Spencer Hill Contemporary. She writes young adult novels and is represented by Marcy Posner of Folio Literary Management. She thinks you’re pretty cool.

Danielle EllisonDanielle Ellison is from a small town in West Virginia. She spent her childhood pretending to fly, talking to imaginary friends, and telling stories. She hasn’t changed much since then. You can still find her pretending to work, talking to imaginary characters, and writing stories. When she’s not writing, Danielle is probably drinking coffee, fighting her nomadic urges, watching too much TV, or dreaming of the day when she can be British. She is the author of five upcoming novels and you can find her on twitter @DanielleEWrites.

Hi Damon, Thank you so much! The plan was originally to sell the trilogy, but only the first was published as a standalone. I do have plans to write the sequel — trying to see if the trilogy will be picked up first. Either way, it’s coming! Thank you so much for reading and enjoying Bloodspell!
