YASH Spring 2017

Welcome to the awesomesauce book circus that is the YA Scavenger Hunt! For those new to the fun-fest that is YASH, this bi-annual event was first organized by the fabulous Colleen Houck as a way to give readers a chance to gain access to bonus material from their favorite authors … and a chance to win some awesome prizes!

So for those of you who don’t know me, I’m the author of several books, including the #1 Amazon best-seller BLOODSPELL and the IPPY award winning BLOODCRAFT; The AQUARATHI Series from Harlequin Teen – WATERFELLOCEANBORN, and SEAMONSTER; as well as THE ALMOST GIRLTHE FALLEN PRINCE, and the Spring 2014 Kids’ Indie Next Pick ALPHA GODDESS from Sky Pony Press. I am also the co-author of the steamy historical romance series: the LORDS OF ESSEX.

If you came here looking for my bonus material, a very special sneak peek from my forthcoming DARK GODDESS, you’ll have to keep hunting!

ARE YOU GUYS READY?!?!

I am super-thrilled to be hosting the lovely Lea Nolan and wonderful book, CONJURE, for this leg of the YA Scavenger Hunt!

About Lea:

Lea NolanLea Nolan is a USA Today bestselling author who writes books for young adults featuring bright heroines, crazy-hot heroes, diabolical plot twists, plus a dose of magic, a draft of romance, and a sprinkle of history. She also pens smart, witty contemporary stories for adults filled with head-swooning, heart-throbbing, sweep-you-off your feet romance.

Born and raised on Long Island, New York, she loves the water far too much to live inland. With her heroically supportive husband and three clever children, she resides in Maryland where she scarfs down crab cakes whenever possible and makes the ugliest birthday cakes known to man.

About CONJURE:

Conjure Lea NolanBe careful what you search for…

Emma Guthrie expects this summer to be like any other in the South Carolina Lowcountry–hot and steamy with plenty of beach time alongside her best friend and secret crush, Cooper Beaumont, and Emma’s ever-present twin brother, Jack. But then a mysterious eighteenth-century message in a bottle surfaces, revealing a hidden pirate bounty. Lured by the adventure, the trio discovers the treasure and unwittingly unleashes an ancient Gullah curse that attacks Jack with the wicked flesh-eating Creep and promises to steal Cooper’s soul on his approaching sixteenth birthday.

But when a strange girl appears bent on revenge, demon dogs become a threat, and Jack turns into a walking skeleton, Emma has no choice but to learn hoodoo magic to undo the hex, all before summer—and her friends–are lost forever.

EXCLUSIVE CONTENT

And DRUMROLL please…now for Lea’s exclusive content!

Setting is an essential element in each of the books in the Hoodoo Apprentice series. It’s so important, it’s practically a character. The series is set in the South Carolina low country so there were tons of great local features to weave into the stories. For example you’ll find lots of giant, spindly, live oak trees covered in sweeping Spanish moss, old colonial-era ruins, pristine beaches, and prickly palmetto trees. One of my favorite southern features is the Bottle Tree.

Southern Bottle Trees

According to AppalachianHistory.net bottle trees originated in the 9th century Kongo. Central Africans believed that genii or evil spirits could be captured during the night in empty glass bottles that had been placed outside near a home. The spirits would be destroyed the next day when the sun shined, or gotten rid of by corking the bottle and throwing it in a river.  Kongo tree altars were also used to honor deceased relatives. These practices were brought to North America and Europe by enslaved Africans. Today you can see these beautiful bottle trees all over the American south.

In CONJURE, the first book of the Hoodoo Apprentice series, we’re introduced to Miss Delia, the hoodoo root worker, and her enormous bottle tree. It’s at least twice the size of her house and is covered with thousands of multicolored bottles that were hung over several generations. The bottles sway in the breeze whenever Miss Delia or her apprentice, Emma Guthrie conjure up an elemental spell. The bottle tree offers up a few magical surprises of its own in the subsequent books, ALLURE and ILLUSION, but I don’t want to spoil them here. For those tidbits, you’ll need to check out the Hoodoo Apprentice series yourself.

Three Hoodoo Covers Together

So cool, right? This series makes me want to do THIRTEEN cartwheels!

Don’t forget to enter the contest for a chance to win a ton of signed books by me, Lea Nolan and more! To enter, you need to know that my favorite number is hidden somewhere in this post (hint: scroll up two lines – it’s in blue and it starts with THIR and ends with TEEN). Add up all the favorite numbers of the authors on the blue team and you’ll have all the secret code to enter for the grand prize!

Alpha GoddessWhile you’re here with me, be sure to enter the personal contest I’m hosting below for a chance to win two books of your choice and free signed books (including the first book in the award-winning INDIE NEXT ALPHA GODDESS series and BLOODBOUND, my new CRUENTUS CURSE novella). If I could be a fictional character for one day, I think I would like to be…Kelley from the Wondrous Strange series by Lesley Livingston. I think it would be so cool being a fairy and having powers to help people and make plants, trees, and flowers grow to help and protect our environment.

I have to agree with several of the choices to be Feyre obvioulsy just for Rhys and Aelin because “HELLO!!” complete bada@#, but I think if I could be any character from any fictional story I would be Luna Lovegood. She is quirky and strange but she is fiercely loyal and so completely happy to just be herself. Not to mention you get to go to Hogwarts and do magic!
