Top 10 Books I’d Save During the Zombie Apocalypse

You know it’s coming … the ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE, an imminent storm of brain-consuming, virus-ridden dead bodies coming for YOU. The question is, are you prepared? Have you taken all the necessary precautions to ensure your bite-free survival? If you’re not sure where to start, be sure to consult the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) guide, Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse. You should also check out my previous post about Zombieland for some more tips.

As with any pandemic threatening extinction of the human species, you may also start to think about what you would save if you had to leave the majority of your belongings aside … food, water, supplies, clothing, weapons, books.

Books, you say? Yes, books. They are a non-perishable source of sustenance. They don’t need batteries or a power source. They don’t need any extra special care–they’re made to be handled, read and loved. Like food, they fuel you, they keep your mind limber, they keep you energized, they inspire you. Why wouldn’t you take your favorite book along? After all, who knows when you may need a quiet reading break after running and fighting flesh-eating fiends for days on end? Tyrion Lannister from George R.R. Martin‘s prolific Game of Thrones, says it best, “Well, my brother has his sword and I have my mind. And a mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone.โ€

So keep yourself sharp. Think smart. And be READY to face the mind-munching hordes.

Here are the top 10 books I would save from my current collection during the zombie apocalypse (this list may be subject to change and does not include books that I do not own):

1. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

2. Go Ask Alice by Anonymous

3. Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Ryhs

4. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

5. Lord of the Flies by William Golding

6. Paradise Lost by John Milton

7. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

8. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

9. Complete Illustrated Stories of the Brothers Grimm

10. Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein

Oh, and just for shits and giggles, a copy of The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks wouldn’t hurt either. I know you’re probably thinking, why isn’t a copy of her own book, Bloodspell, in there? Well, that would be shameless self-promotion in the face of bone-sucking monsters, wouldn’t it? I may as well say, hey brain-eaters, come get the author reading her own book because she just can’t get enough of herself. Jokes aside, as much as I love Bloodspell, the story is mine and is already in my head. Saving my own book would sort of defeat the whole purpose of this exercise. The stories of others inspire me so they’re on this list. I guess I can just hope thatย Bloodspell will inspire someone else the same way!

What are some of your cherished favorites?
